Investing in a more sustainable business: Accor’s best CSR Initiative award winning Ibis Budget Leicester & Derby Hotels Journey

Accor's best CSR Initiative awarding winning Ibis Budget Leicester and Derby Hotels shares how they identified and implemented actions that has benefitted their business operations and plans on continuing with their sustainability journey with GreenerFuture Leicestershire Business Advisory Service

Identifying our needs and challenges

The mission was to reduce energy consumption, ensuring water conservation and enhancing overall operational efficiency. We were able to identify this through a review of our energy bills, environmental impact, calculation of our scope 1 and 2 emissions and customer feedback, which pointed out areas for improvement.

One of the primary challenges we faced was the initial investment in air source heat pumps, solar panels and energy efficient appliances. We overcame this challenge by securing government grants specifically aimed at businesses transitioning to more sustainable practice, and carefully planning our budget to ensure that the long-term savings outweighed the upfront costs. These grants helped us fund the installation of advanced air source heat pumps, and solar panel systems. They played a crucial role in reducing the financial burden.

Benefits of our Investments

Our business has significantly benefited from implementing eco friendly solutions to improve energy efficiency , reduce water consumption, and enhance guest comfort and security at our hotels. Using advanced technologies, the hotels operate in line with sustainable development principles in reducing our carbon footprint. We undertook an overview of what we can do and invested in Electric Vehicle Charging (eight charging points), Water Conservation Systems, Water Softener Systems, Gas Condenser Boilers and Eco-friendly Appliances for our laundry and kitchen.

We also installed two 37 kW solar panel systems which produce electricity and reduce energy consumption. So, on a sunny day in March the panels generate around 16kW of electricity during daytime hours. This increases to around 24kW in the month of May and June with the increase in day light hours. These actions have reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions, lowering operating costs and making our facilities more attractive to eco-conscious customers.

By highlighting our sustainable practices, we have been able to to attract eco-conscious customers and demonstrate to other businesses that sustainability is not only beneficial for the environment but also a sound business strategy.

Future plans to Innovate our sustainability efforts

My advice to other businesses is to view sustainability as an opportunity, not a burden. Implementing sustainable practices can save money in the long run through energy efficiency and waste reduction. It also enhances your brand's image and attracts a growing market for eco-conscious consumers. Start small with initiatives such as LED lighting, water saving systems, and energy efficiency appliances.

Our Leicester based hotel is currently working with GreenerFuture Leicestershire Business Advisory Service on their Leadership Pathway with their sustainability consultant expert on our scope 3 emissions as we look for ways to innovate our sustainability objectives.
