Leicester City Council is working with residents, partners, schools and other organisations across the city to towards creating a Climate Ready Leicester. The council first declared a climate emergency in 2019 – publishing its first action plan in 2020. Its second action plan, the Climate Ready Leicester Plan, is running from 2023 - 2028.

What can I do?
Our Climate Ready Leicester online residents guide has been designed to help us all take actions that can make a difference in reducing our impact and many of the ideas are free or low cost. They cover actions we can all take on energy, travel, food, consumption, waste and recycling, and outdoor space.
Free support available for Leicester residents
We have a number of specific projects to assist householders with energy savings as well as energy advice and signposting to energy efficiency support available.
Projects include:
Warm Homes Local Grant– New government funded grants to help save energy in your homes. A range of insulation, low carbon heating and solar panels will be available to apply for. The scheme will be available until March 2028
Homewise Retrofit planner -online tool to enter details about your property and the tool will suggest tailored energy-saving measures and improvements you can make
ECO Flex - Through the government's Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, qualifying households can receive funding for heating upgrades or home insulation improvements. This initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency for lower-income homes and is active until March 2026.
What is the Council doing?
This Climate Ready Leicester plan includes steps to reduce the council's and Leicester's carbon emissions towards our ambition of reaching net zero. It also covers actions to reduce our wider impact on climate change and to adapt and make the city resilient to the changes happening. Above all, the plan takes a 'people-centred' approach to achieving these changes. This includes offering information and support, and making sure actions bring wider benefits to help people with the cost of living and other issues affecting quality of life.
