Introduction to LAEPs
Over 300 local authorities across the UK have declared a climate emergency, setting bold decarbonisation targets. To achieve these, many are adopting Local Area Energy Plans (LAEPs)—the leading method for turning ambitious goals into tangible action. By the end of 2024, more than 30% of local authorities will have a LAEP or be actively developing one.
The Leicester & Leicestershire LAEP is a prime example, charting a pathway to a fully decarbonised energy system by 2050. This collaborative, data-driven plan will play a vital role in achieving Net Zero while maximizing societal benefits and delivering an innovative visualisation tool to allow deeper engagement with spatial and project data.
Understand Local Area Energy Plans
A LAEP is a cost-effective, integrated spatial plan designed to meet carbon reduction targets while addressing local needs. It:
- Explores decarbonisation pathways, such as improving building efficiency, deploying low-carbon heating, and integrating renewable energy systems.
- Defines actionable, near-term steps alongside a long-term vision for a sustainable energy future.
- Evolves regularly to stay relevant amidst policy and technological changes.
